Programmer looking for a Designer for long-term partnership
Required Knowledge
CSS, HTML, Photoshop/GIMP - whatever tools you use, good UI skills
Additional Info
I am a programmer with over 10 years programming professionally. I have already survived one startup and learned quite a bit about how to do things as well as how not to do them.
I have an idea for a software application to fill a need that currently is not being met by any other software in a growing but under-publicized segment of US and possibly international businesses. My research has discovered that nearly no one is servicing this market. There has already been one request for software to fill this niche so the need is truly there. Whether or not someone will capitalize on that need is another question entirely. I have written the framework for it as well as started on a portion of it.
I am looking for one or two partners who would like to form a company to develop software that would fill this need and possibly some needs of their own. The latter revolving around the need to control one?s destiny for better or worse.
This application does not have anything to do with social networking, Web 2.0?s marketing hype, or some hair-brained idea reminiscent of the first .com bubble. It?s a large web application and it relies on security, reliability, fast customization, ease of use, and scalability rather then how much Flash, AJAX, and the number of widgets that can be stuffed on a single web page.
I think the best chance for success in the partnership lies in sharing several core traits as well as each partner offering something lacking in the other partners. I know I am lacking in design skills but I am strong in programming and common sense business skills. Here are some traits about myself and what I am looking for in others that I think are important:
* When confronted with a start-up or new business proposal they are more concerned with the soundness of the business plan then what OS the developers use daily, the technology, or the size or their monitor screen.
* Open minded to whatever technology is best suited to solve the problem at hand. A pragmatic realist more than a blind crusader for some technology.
* Far-ranging generalist with a few core competencies. Someone who likes to learn about many aspects of IT as opposed to someone who sees it as only a paycheck.
* Stubborn and willing to hang in there working to achieve a goal as opposed to someone who expects instant over night success. This application has the potential to be large and in-charge ... bad and nation-wide. This project could be intimidating to those of small minds. I am looking for someone who can dream big and is willing to do what it takes to make that dream come true.
* Someone who values the people they work with and their working environment more than a number on a paycheck. Not that they don?t think money isn?t important ... it is ... its just not the most important thing.
* Someone who buys computer books and spends hours outside of their 40 hour work week learning about new technology and working on honing their skills. Someone who has several networked computers at home or has a virtual network in lieu of a bunch of old boxen still chugging away.
TECHNOLOGIES TO BE USED
* Whatever is best for this particular problem. Currently that is Ruby on Rails or Merb/sequel, nginx, mongrel, (maybe thin), swiftiply, postgresql, and either subversion or mercurial. Unlike others I don?t care what OS or tools you use as long as your code works and plays well with other developers.
THE PLAN
* The current plan is to work on it part time and go full time when there is enough revenue to pay salaries.
